Karl Hjalmar Branting (pronunciation) ( info ) , born 23 november 1860 in Clara Parish [ 1 ] in Stockholm , died 24 February 1925 in the Adolf Fredrik church [ 1 ] in Stockholm, was a Swedish Social Democratic politician and newspaperman. He was party leader for the Social Democrats in 1907 and in 1920 became Sweden's first Socialist prime minister. Brantings important assignments include member of parliament ( second chamber ) from 1897 to 1925, leader of the Social Democrats from 1907 to 1925, Minister of Finance from 1917 to 1918 and Prime Minister in 1920, 1921 to 1923 (when he was also the Minister of Foreign Affairs ) and from 1924 to 1925. Hjalmar Branting was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1921 along with Christian Lange for his major contributions in the League of Nations . Branting married in 1884, the journalist Anna Jäderin . Together they had two children: George (1887-1965), [ 2 ] a lawyer, member of parliament, and Publisher, as well as Sonja (1890-1981), [ 2 ] attorney, feminist, member of parliament and is married to lawyer Olof Westerståhl (1884-1948) and mother of the political scientist Jörgen Westerståhl . Hjalmar Branting was also stepfather to Vera von Kræmer (1878-1940) and Henry von Kræmer (1880-1957), the children of Anna Branting in her marriage with Lieutenant Gustav von Kræmer.
