A scene from the film "Romeo and Juliet" showing the young lovers of Verona, Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey, exchange their first passionate kiss, 1967. Romeo and Juliet is a 1968 British-Italian romance film based on the tragic play of the same name (1591–95) by William Shakespeare. The film was directed and co-written by Franco Zeffirelli, and stars Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey. It won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography (Pasqualino De Santis) and Best Costume Design (Danilo Donati); it was also nominated for Best Director and Best Picture, making it the last Shakespearean film to be nominated for Best Picture to date. Sir Laurence Olivier spoke the film's prologue and epilogue and reportedly dubbed the voice of the Italian actor playing Lord Montague, but was not credited in the film. Leonard Whiting (born 30 June 1950) is an English actor who is best known for his role as Romeo in the 1968 Zeffirelli film version of Romeo and Juliet opposite Olivia Hussey's Juliet, a role which earned him the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year - Actor. He was touted as a star in the making, the next Laurence Olivier and the next great British actor. Olivia Hussey (born Olivia Osuna; 17 April 1951) is an Argentine-British actress who became famous for her role as Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 film version of Romeo and Juliet, winning a Golden Globe and also the David di Donatello Award for best actress.
