Description

An old barrel covered with leather makes a fine drum which this child has covered with sand to make it more fun. With an outlet for energy like this, a child will be less likely to destroy more fragile toys. Creative toys from the scrapheap. The child's world of toys need not be confined to the conventional department store toys as demonstrated by the small but ingenious Modern Play School in Los Angeles, Ca., a nursery school founded by Mrs. Phyllis Fleishman. Turning to "old junk" play things, she equipped her school with such unlikely objects as an airplane engine crate, the hulk of an old auto, a picnic-table top, an old bathtub etc. Along with the usual sandbox and jungle-jim, her improvisations made an instantaneous hit with children. The nearest war surplus store or even a junkyard has a wealth of material that will further a child's imagination and inventiveness much better than ready-made toys. Such toys save parents money and give offsprings a wide latitude for fun and development. child, playing, junk, people, imagination, scrap
