Baudouin reigned as King of the Belgians, following his father's abdication, from 1951 until his death in 1993. He was the eldest son of King Leopold III (1901–83) and his first wife, Princess Astrid of Sweden (1905–35). During Baudouin's reign the colony of Belgian Congo became independent. The King personally attended the festivities; he gave a speech that received a blistering response by Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba. He was the 1,176th Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Spain in 1960 and the 930th Knight of the Order of the Garter. He was born on 7 September 1930 and died on 31 July 1993. Dona Fabiola, Queen Fabiola of Belgium is the widow of King Baudouin. She was queen consort for 33 years, between her wedding in 1960 and her husband's death in 1993. She was born on 11 June 1928. Queen Fabiola of Belgium was the wife of Baudouin, King of the Belgians. She was Queen consort of the Belgians for 33 years, between her wedding in 1960 and her husband's death in 1993. The couple were unable to have children, and the crown then passed to her husband's younger brother, King Albert II. She was born on 11 June 1928 and died on 5 December 2014.
