US Army officials said the civilians were not killed by accidental shellfire or bomb burst but were bludgeoned to death by rifles and guns wielded by German thrusting to the west on the First US Army front. By December 23, 1944, the eight day of the new Nazzi offensive, American troops had regained control of Stavelot and were beating back two Nazzi spearheads which threatened to reach the Meuse River. M. Pierlot, Prime Minister of Belgium, gave encouragement to province temporarily occupied by the Nazzis. In a Christmas Eve message to the Belgian people, he said: "The new occupation they have to suffer will not last a long time. The armed Allies have all the means to fave the situation. The have immense superiority in armament and men and they are commanded by chiefs whose capacity has been proved.
