The town of Vire formerly the capital of Lower Normandy at the base of the Cherbourg peninsular, was liberated by the Allies after fierce enemy resistance on August 7th when they entered the town, the Allies found that severe damage had been doe to the railway and its rolling stock by Allied bombing.
