The steamer mimi ran ashore on Cape Banks the northern headland of Botany Bay, ina heavy fog in the night of May 13th. The crew was rescued by members of the garrison stationed at Cape Banks and by the police. Two lives were lost. The vessel is a total lost. Cape Banks is part of Botany Bay National Park at La Perouse, located approximately 17km south east of Sydney CBD. It is tucked away deep inside NSW Golf Club, hidden from the main attractions of La Perouse which includes Bare Island, Custom Tower, La Perouse's Monument and Museum, shops and beaches and bays.
