Passion, determination and a love of all things Greek were what impelled Paul Canellopoulos to start his collection - as early as his student years in Munich in the 1920’s. Two icons - a Virgin and a St. Nicholas - were the first items he acquired for a collection which, many years later, would be described as one of the most extraordinary private collections of Greek art to be found anywhere in the world. As the years went by, he and his wife Alexandra were to enrich the collection with many other antiquities, mainly through purchases made abroad. Their love of Greek civilization and their desire to see Greece’s cultural legacy remain within Greek borders led to the creation of a collection of some 6,500 works of art, dating from prehistoric to modern times. In 1972 the couple donated the collection to the Greek state so that a museum could be founded to highlight the enduring values and continuity of Greek art. ‘The collection was the love of his life’, Alexandra Canellopoulos once said, reporting her husband’s own words. Both of them saw the Museum which housed their collection as their own ‘child’. When the couple decided to donate their collection to the state they were entitled to tax relief of 25 million drachmas. However, Paul Canellopoulos not only declined to take advantage of the exemption, he actually insisted on having his decision included in the legal instrument affecting the transfer of ownership.
