Portrait of Shmuel Yosef Agnon, 1966. The 1966 Nobel prize for literature is being shared by two Jewish writers- Shmuel Yosef Agnon and Nelly Sachs. Shmuel Yosef Agnon is 78 years old and lives in Jerusalem. The Swedish Academy praised him for his "profoundly characteristic narrative art" depicting the life of the Jewish people. He will share as award pf 20,000 pound with Miss Sachs. Shmuel Yosef Agnon was born in Poland with the name Czaczkes. Agnon was originally a pen name which he later adopted as a family name. he live in Israel from 1908 to 1913 and then retured to Berlin to study, making a living by teaching. In 1924 he returned to Israel where he has lived ever since. Agnon writes in old-fashioned Hebrew and his works are compulsory reading in Israeli secondary scholls and universities. Very few of his works have been translatesd from the Hebrew. His stories range widely in mood, place and time. His three full length novels are; "The Bridal Canopy" a story of his native Poland; "A Guest for the Night" recounting his experiences during a tour of Jewish communities in 1932 and "Only Yesterday' which tells of the early struggles of the pioneers in Israel. In 1919 Agnon married Easther Marx who he met in Berlin. They have a son and a daughter.
