Boris Yeltsin Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin (Russian: Бори́с Никола́евич Е́льцин; born February 1, 1931 in the Butka in Sverdlovsk oblast in the Soviet Union (present-day Russia), died April 23, 2007 in Moscow, Russia, was a Russian politician. He was Russia's first democratically elected president and sat in power from July 10, 1991, when Russia was a Soviet republic, until December 31, 1999, when he was succeeded by Vladimir Putin.
