Samuel Daniel "Shafiishuna" Nujoma is a Namibian anti-apartheid activist and politician who served as the first President of Namibia from 21 March 1990 to 21 March 2005. Nujoma was a co-founder of the South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO). He led SWAPO in its long struggle against South African rule and took office as President when Namibia obtained independence on 21 March 1990. He was subsequently re-elected in 1994 and 1999, remaining in office until March 2005. He was President of SWAPO from its founding in 1960 until 2007. He was born on born 12 May 1929.
