Kuropyatnikov continued firing with one arm. Suddenly he noticed that the smoke canisters lying on top of the depth charges on the vessels bows were on fire. An explosion was imminent. Despite the pain he was in, he crawled towards the bows, lost consciousness several times on the way, but eventually reached his object, seized the rope binding the canisters together and heaved them overboard. His gallant act prevented and explosion and the wreck of the launch, Kuropyatnikov has been awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
