Some glimpses of Turkey today Turkish bazars are less colorful than those of North Africa. Drab garments, shabby replicas of Western dress, have replaced colorful Oriental garb since the father of modern Turkey, Kemal Ataturk, issued strict laws forbidding the use of fes, Kefich and Turban (and women's veils, above all). Nevertheless peasant women still manage to keep up some sort of Oriental tradition in their dress.
