Václav Havel (Czech pronunciation)), born October 5, 1936 in Prague, December 18, 2011 [1] in Hrádecek near Trutnov, was a Czech politician and dramatist. Havel was Czechoslovakian President 1989-1992 and President of Czech Republic 1993-2003. He was one of the leading people in the civil rights movement Charta 77. Havel received a wide range of awards and prizes for his struggle for democracy and human rights. In 1986, Havel received the Erasmus Prize, awarded annually in the Netherlands to people who worked for humanistic ideals in Europe.
