Vintage photo of Marie Besnard and two other men. Photo taken on December 19, 1961. Marie Besnard, her maiden name Mary Josephine Philippine Davaillaud, born 15 August 1896 in Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé and the dead 14 February 1980 in Loudon , nicknamed "the poisoner of Loudun" , "the Brinvilliers Loudun" or "Good Lady of Loudun", was suspected of being a serial killer and remains at the center of a legal puzzles French of the twentieth century . This is the 21 July 1949 that Marie Besnard is indicted for murder by poisoning of twelve people, including her own husband. The story is set in the town of Loudun (8000 inhabitants at the material time), where the case Grandier (born in 1590 and died at the stake of Loudun in 1634 ) caused quite a stir a few centuries previously. Several similarities between the two cases is observed, the very high proportion of rumors ; rumors that have played in the arrest of Marie Besnard like that of Grandier. This is what underlines Frédéric Pottecher , crime reporter on the radio the trial of Marie Besnard, in the book's foreword We Grandier and Martin Guerre, condemned and executed (edition Cherche-Moon). The two accused never gave any information that could be held against them. Marie Besnard was described as "abnormally normal" by psychiatry . After three trials, which lasted more than ten years, Marie Besnard, accused and threatened with the death penalty , was released in 1954 and acquitted by the Assize Court of Gironde on 12 December 1961 .
