The newly developed light-alloy V8-engines from Daimler-Benz are characterized by higher output coupled at the same time with increased economy and lower weight. The use of light alloy cuts 45 kg from the 3.8 litre power plant and 50 kg from the 5 litre unit. The crankcase consists of an aluminum alloy containing silicon and is made by the low-pressure die-casting process. The cylinder surfaces are chemically treated to expose the hard silicon crystals. This microscopic layer of silicon crystals serves the chromium-plated light-alloy pistons as a low-wearing surface on which to travel. In the past, the photos were often parts of a series or were mass-produced by the archives. Nowadays, their number is decimated - many were destroyed by time, use, or natural disasters. Few were preserved and are nowadays carefully stored in our archives.
