The group of international and first class rugby players had to withdraw from the Benidorm European Sevens tournament because of wounds suffered by six of them in a late-night beating in the Spanish resort. Arriving at Heathrow yesterday two of the team said the incident in the early hours of Saturday morning was "a totally unprovoked attack" by local police. Eight members of the team, which has won the international tournament twice, were walking from a pub on the Benidorm seafront when trouble began. André Dent, 34, the Harlequins player, had to seek hospital treatment after the fracas. He had five stitches put in a cut on his right eye and is thought to have a broken finger, sustained when trying to protect himself from a baton blow aimed at his head.
