Apollo 11 was the first manned spacecraft to land on the moon, the highlight of NASA's Apollo program and a milestone in the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. The crew consisted of the commander Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. Apollo 11 was postponed July 16, 1969, Armstrong and Aldrin completed the first manned landing on the moon on July 20 and the crew returned to Earth on July 24. Apollo 11 thus fulfilled President John F. Kennedy's goal of "... before the end of the decade having landed a human on the moon and taken him back to safety." which was stated at a speech to Congress May 25, 1961.
