Beverley Westacott is a designer of unique knitwear from Bicester, England. She had been a teacher for four years in art and textiles at a comprehensive in Cirencester, but her plans changed after she married schoolteacher James Smith. For a term she commuted daily to Cirencester, but she did not fancy undertaking the journey in the winter. She then found herself at Bicester Job Centre in Manorsfield Road talking to Mr Donald Apps of the Small Firms Service, which is part of the Department of Industry. Beverley joined the enterprise allowance scheme, which gave her £40 a week for a year, and she used £1,000 of her own money to show she was willing to put in her own money. The scheme also offers free counselling sessions as well and an information session on the nuts and bolts of running a business. Beverley runs her workshop in the top bedroom of her cottage and has bought a computerised knitting machine to replace an older model. In the past, the photos were often parts of a series or were mass-produced by the archives. Nowadays, their number is decimated - many were destroyed by time, use, or natural disasters. Few were preserved and are nowadays carefully stored in our archives.
