MFI, the furniture store on Botley Road, is considering appealing to Environment Minister after their plans to demolish Ford's original ice rink and replace it with a plastic and steel building were refused by the City Council. The company wanted to develop the site into a two-storey building with two showrooms and five small shops, but planners were concerned about the traffic impact and proposed a smaller scheme. MFI spokesperson Phil Gibbs said the plan was similar to the original, but added that "there are only so many ways of arranging things to make sense." The old ice rink was closed in 1934 after only four years, and since then it has been used as a cinema and a marmalade factory.
