On September 19th 1964, Mr. R. Powell of Wantage explained the finer points of his model traction engine to 15-year-old Stephen Parker at the A.E.R.E. model exhibition showing at the Harwell social club. The display ranged from a replica of Steventon Methodist Church to a six-way racing car track, and the club hoped to beat last year's attendance of over 1,000 people. Despite the organisers doubling the length of time for the exhibition and floor area, there was still a huge lunchtime crush of Harwell employees when it opened the day before. Few were preserved and are nowadays carefully stored in our archives.
