On October 30, 1979, a group of 900 Animal Aid protesters marched through the streets of Oxford to call for an end to animal experimentation in university laboratories. Susan Marshall, one of the protesters, presented a letter to Wilfred Heath, a porter at The Clarendon, the university's student residence. The letter, addressed to Sir Rex Richards, the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University, called for an end to the "unspeakably cruel experiments" practiced in the university's laboratories. The protesters had been informed that Sir Rex Richards did not wish to receive the letter personally, so it was accepted by Wilfred Heath instead. Few were preserved and are nowadays carefully stored in our archives.
