Mr. Michael Howard, 55, was the head of St. Michael's Church of England School in Marston, Oxford since 1974. During his 13 year tenure, he fought to keep the small school open, as it has only one other staff member and 62 pupils. During a surprise party thrown by the pupils, parents, and past parents, a cake made by a grateful mother was presented to Mr. Howard, who shared it with everyone in attendance. In addition, pupils put on a play for Mr. Howard and two of the oldest girls in the school, Kelly Charlett and Alison Beauchamp, presented him with a metronome on behalf of the entire school. A second party was held for the school governors, past and present teachers, and his friends to wish him well. Few were preserved and are nowadays carefully stored in our archives.
