The National Pigeon Service - Vintage Photograph

Eng: During the First World War, the army still used pigeons to transmit messages. There was even a special unit that took care of the care and training of the flying couriers: the National Pigeon Service. Here you see a group of recruits of this unit during their training in The Hague in 1917. Amongst them Jef Tillmans from Meerssen (far right, kneeling in the middle) Dutch: Voor het overbrengen van berichten maakte het leger ten tijde van de eerste wereldoorlog nog gebruik van duiven. Er was zelfs een speciale eenheid die zich bezighield met de verzorging en training van de vliegende koeriers: de Rijks Postduivendienst. Hier ziet u een groep rekruten van dit onderdeel tijdens hun opleiding in Den Haag in 1917. Since the photos are old press photographs they may have scratches, lines, or other wears of time, which just underlines the authenticity and age of the photos. In the past, the photos were often parts of a series or were mass-produced by the archives. Nowadays, their number is decimated - many were destroyed by time, use, or natural disasters. Few were preserved and are nowadays carefully stored in our archives.
